Dr. Peter T. Filipov so believes in the value of good eye care that he will treat any patient who steps through the doors of Azar Eye Institute. He has been with the practice since January of 1997 and has since made several critical diagnoses through eye examinations – even less obvious ones such as breast cancer and lymphoma. He once diagnosed three brain tumors in one month, including a 17-year old female who remains one of Dr. Filipov’s patients. Dr. Filipov says most ophthalmologists have a “fish hook” story. His ended with the removal of a three inch fishing hook (worm still attached) from a woman’s eye in the PRMC Emergency Room. She was accidentally hooked by her son during a fishing outing.

Dr. Filipov received a B.S. in Biochemistry and Zoology from the University of Maryland in 1983. He continued on to attend the St. Louis University Medical School, where he graduated in May of 1987.

Board Certified, he performed his internship at the Washington Hospital Center and his residency at Temple University Hospital. After his residency, Dr. Filipov served four years in the Air Force as a staff ophthalmologist at Andrews Air Force Base. At the same time, he was a surgical instructor at Georgetown University and the Uniformed Health Services School of Medicine. Dr. Filipov was awarded a Distinguished Service Medal for his time served in the Air Force.

Dr. Filipov is the senior surgeon at Azar Eye Institute. He treats a wide range of ophthalmic disorders with expertise in the treatment of diabetic patients, cataract and pediatric surgeries as well as operating on high risk patients. He recalls a diabetic patient he operated on with only one functional eye. The operation was a success and the woman is now able to drive again.

Dr. Filipov lives in Salisbury with his wife Jane and their three children, where he enjoys boating, bicycling, and music.
