CATARACT POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS



YOU WILL BE WEARING AN EYE SHIELD WHEN YOU LEAVE THE OPERATING ROOM. YOU WILL WEAR IT AT ALL TIMES UNTIL YOU RETURN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR THE NEXT MORNING, EXCEPT WHEN PUTTING IN YOUR EYE DROPS.  YOU WILL RESUME YOUR EYE DROPS WHEN YOU RETURN HOME FROM THE SURGERY CENTER THE DAY OF YOUR PROCEDURE. PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE SHEET PROVIDED TO YOU IN THE RECOVERY AREA. 
YOU WILL BE USING:
ANTIBIOTIC (TOBRAMYCIN) - 3 TIMES A DAY UNTIL DIRECTED OTHERWISE
STEROID (DUREZOL) -3 TIMES A DAY UNTIL DIRECTED OTHERWISE 
NON-STEROIDAL (ILEVRO) – EVERY MORNING UNTIL DIRECTED OTHERWISE


YOU MAY EAT A REGULAR DIET AND CONTINUE ALL YOUR MEDICATIONS ON YOUR REGULAR SCHEDULE.


IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY DISCOMFORT SUCH AS AN ACHE, SORENESS, SCRATCHINESS, OR ITCHINESS, THIS IS COMPLETELY NORMAL AND YOU MAY TAKE ANY OVER THE COUNTER PAIN RELIEVER SUCH AS ALEVE, ADVIL OR TYLENOL.  IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY SEVERE PAIN THAT IS NOT RELIEVED BY YOUR PAIN RELIEVER PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE. 410-546-2500. THERE IS A PHYSICIAN ON CALL AFTER HOURS SHOULD YOU EXPERIENCE A PROBLEM.


YOU MAY NOT LIFT ANYTHING MORE THAN 5 POUNDS FOR THE FIRST 24-48 HOURS. YOUR DOCTOR WILL ADVISE YOU WHEN YOU MAY INCREASE YOUR ACTIVITY. 
WALKING IS FINE AS LONG AS SOMEONE IS WITH YOU THE DAY OF SURGERY AS YOU MAY BE UNSTEADY BECAUSE YOU HAVE HAD SEDATION. 
YOU MAY BEND OVER BRIEFLY, BUT NOT FOR AN EXTENDED AMOUNT OF TIME. DO NOT RUB OR BUMP YOUR EYE AFTER SURGERY. 


FINALLY, WHEN RETURNING FOR YOUR POST-OPERATIVE APPOINTMENT PLEASE GO TO THE OFFICE WHERE YOU NORMALLY GO FOR AN EYE EXAM. DO NOT GO BACK TO THE SURGERY CENTER.
